Pitter patter pitter patter on my shoulders... Dear families, This is our last week at Acorns. Then it will be Easter holidays, which are very long. The first session back is Wednesday 3rd May, Thursday 4th May, Friday 5th May. Sorry, we are not offering any special drop in session as the interest was very low, we guessed most people leave London for sunny beaches or rainy fields! We are going to say good bye to Susannah. She is going to miss all the children's sunny smiles. We welcome Kat as our new leader for the Thursday and Friday groups, whilst Claudia will carry on with her Wednesday group. Kat has been a great support and faithful assistant bring her wisdom and calm energy to the group session and her delicious soda bread! Adult and Child Group reflects Steiner’s wish to nurture children and their families, as well as to recognise the importance of protecting the wonder of early childhood. We invite Parents/carers and children to our Acorns, old and new, to join us on the next term. Bookings for the next term, called summer term (but where is the summer?) are open on line, soon after Easter week. We do not have a “drop in” session, families are asked to book a place and pay in advance for a term. There is a maximum number of families expected for each session and so, with the limited space we have available, is more comfortable for everyone. It also provides a known group for both the children and parents, carers, enabling support and friendships to grow. We sometimes have a waiting list as sessions fill up very quickly. For this it is best you book asap, as places get booked on a first come first served basis. If a particular group you have been attending is your favourite one, do book now so not to loose your space, as newcomers will book as well!

We meet at the table far left corner from the main entrance, opposite theatre doors. On February 2nd, it’s time to celebrate Candlemas.
February 2 is the mid-point between the Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox. Pre-Christian Celtic cultures celebrated this time of year by holding ceremonies to bless the spring planting. It’s also known as Imbolic. Imbolc is a melting pot mixture of Celtic, Roman, and Christian traditions — and even briefly mention a few holidays not from Europe, such as Setbun, the Japanese Bean Throwing and Lantern Festival; Li Chum, the Chinese Spring Festival; and Holi, the Hindu Festival of Colour. Pretty amazing, isn’t it – how all people’s of the world find their unique ways to celebrate and recognize the change of seasons. Since Candlemas is a time of new beginnings, this is a good day to ritually celebrate all things new. Plan a ceremony to name a new baby, officially welcome a new person into a family or plight your troth to your beloved. Make a commitment to a goal (like a New Years resolution): this would be an especially powerful thing to do in a group. If you plan your own ceremony, use these two powerful symbols: fire and water. For instance, wash your hands and bathe your face in salt water, which is especially good for purification. Light a candle as you make your pledge. Incorporate the third symbol of the holiday — seeds — by planting a seed or bulb in a pot to symbolize your commitment, or by blessing a bowl or packet of seeds that you will plant later. You don’t have to be Catholic to gain spiritual benefits from the voluntary surrender of something you cherish. You can give up something frivolous or something serious, but it should be something you will notice. Folk wisdom says it takes six weeks (or approximately the 40 days of Lent) to establish a new habit, so you may end up with a lifestyle change. Since Candlemas is often considered the beginning of spring, you can perform another ritual act of purification: spring cleaning. This would be a good time to do a thorough house cleaning, sweeping the floors with salt water, banishing the gloom of winter and creating a sparkling, shiny new setting for spring. Every year, within a week of Feb 2nd, we can notice increasing light and increasing birdsong. From the dawn of humankind, people have engaged in rituals and activities to mark this halfway point. The European tradition became know as Candlemas, a time to make candles, bless candles and be thankful for no longer having to rise by candlelight! 30/1/2017 0 Comments Colourstrings music sessions Colourstrings
Hello Acorns Families! Colourstrings is back on Tuesdays 10 am under 3’s class. Classes are run by Jo Barwick, a long term Steiner School mother and teacher of music. They are held at Mycenae House (other classes available at Conservatoire Blackheath, other days for older children) Colourstrings is child-centred. The materials are colourful, stimulating and entice children to embark on musical adventures that will enable each of them to fulfil their musical potential through fun and creativity, without pressure. Classes start at around 15 - 18 months and involve most of the senses, taking the children on a musical journey. The children relish having fun, singing, clapping, marching, and socialising, without realising that the songs used in the kindergarten classes have been carefully composed to explore the different musical concepts - rhythm, pitch, melody, dynamics, tempo, character, form and style - in an enjoyable and stimulating but structured way. We invite Acorns families to drop in for a free trial. It is a ten week term to be paid at the beginning of class. It is £70 for the term. However, the term has started, but there are a couple of spaces left for you to join and we will calculate for you the fee according to how many sessions there are left. Please contact me if you have any questions. Enjoy the beginning of autumn and I look forward to seeing you once we have settled in a bit! Warm regards, Susannah Andrews, Acorns Adult and Child leader and organizer, and long time faithful participant of Colourstrings classes.
